August 29, 2007: Farewell Reception for New & Returning Penn Students

Dear Fellow Board Members:

Enclosed are the photos taken at our Farewell Reception for New & Returning Penn Students. Unfortunately, only one returning student was able to attend - Ana Rosa Giannareas, who left for Penn last Saturday. The others had already left.

We did have a surprise visit of Dr. Julio Lara, the College, Class of '93 and his wife - he is presently in Boston but plans to return within a couple of years to Panama and will surely become an active member of our Club. We had two high school/prep students interested in applying to Wharton next year: Fernando Lewis and Eduardo Teran. They saw the newspaper annoucement and asked if they could attend, which made it a bit more fun. They were accompanied by their fathers: Ex Health Minister Dr. Jose Manuel Teran and Fernando Lewis, Sr.

Juan Carlos Canavaggio gave us a very interesting talk on wines, and for those of us from the Board that attended: Fernando, Ramiro, Ana Isabel and myself had a great time.

An idea that occurred to me was to plan for next year a Farewell Reception for the Ivy League group, making it a nice occasion for a gathering. We also need ot make it a lot earlier in the month of August.

The cost was $300 plus the newspaper ad.

Let us plan our September board meeting for Thursday, September 13th to see how we can activate the club. If you think it is a good idea, we should maybe invite Michael Harmon, the new CEO of the Cerveceria Nacional - as we have done with other Penn Alumni in Panama in the past. We might be able to arrange our next session with a visit to the brewery and a get - together afterwards!!

We have pending: election of a new board member to replace Alice Gonzalez-Revilla and invitation for Penn professor to speak. Or an Ivy League session to see a movie such as the one about Global Warming, etc.

Best regards,

Maurice

Penn Alumni Club members visit COPA Airlines Hub in Tocumen

On 5 March 2004, the Penn Alumni Club of Panama visited the Maintenance Facilities of Copa Airlines located in Tocumen. During our visit, we learned about the stringent security measures and maintenance standards that Copa carefully implements to ensure safety on their aircrafts, as well as the investments that Copa is making in the purchase of new aircrafts and repair parts and the excellent training that its employees are afforded. All of these efforts are focused on providing first-class service to all of its customers.

We sincerely thank Anna Karina Smith for making possible this interesting field trip.
